BBC axes business show after 30 years

Gloucestershire's business community might have known it as a trusted companion to coffee and toast since the 1990s, but the BBC will have shocked many viewers this morning by unveiling a new bulletin in its place.

First broadcast in 1995, the BBC's World Business Report (WBR), an offshoot of BBC World News, is no more – and in its place we now have a new format packaged as 'Business Today'.

At the end of the final WBR broadcast yesterday, news anchor Ben Thompson told viewers: "Now, before we go, some news about us. After more than 30 years, we're going to say goodbye to World Business Report."

He added: "It's had quite a few different looks over the years, but it's time for a new look and a new name."

Today's BBC Breakfast format featured the new Business Today fronted by presenter Sally Bundock – who was a regular presenter on the former show.

It is understood that Ms Bundock, Victoria Valentine, Samantha Simmonds, Alice Baxter, and Ben Boulos will continue alongside Ben Thompson and that the replacement show will stand in the same slots as before, with early-bird broadcasts at 5.30am, 6.30am and 7.45am, followed by later segments at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

The WBR bulletin was part of the BBC World's international news feed, with each program lasting 25 minutes. Social media reaction suggests the new show has big shoes to fill, with many voicing their sadness at the loss of a familiar format to start the working day.
